On This Day – 5 January

HRH Prince Bertil: 5 January 1997 was the day HRH Prince Bertil passed away. Prince Bertil was the Duke of Halland, and the paternal uncle of the present king. Until the King and Queen had their first children, Crown Princess Victoria, in 1977. Between 1943 and 1997 he had a love affair with Lilian Craig, something they kept a secret from the world until 1976.

Stockholm-Arlanda Airport: 5 January 1960 was the day when Stockholm-Arlanda airport opened for commercial traffic, with the first scheduled flight later in the year. It is the largest airport in Sweden, and has slightly more than 114 000 flights per year, carrying some 5 million domestic passengers and 17 million international passengers.
