Review: I went with a friend who lives locally in mid-September 2014 to have a long awaited catch up. When we arrived we were promptly greeted at the door and shown to some cosy leather sofas where we were asked if we wanted a drink while our tables were made ready. After waiting for quite a while we were given our drinks – I had a decent prosecco that didn’t cost an arm and a leg. A bit later, we were shown to our table, and rather promptly seen to by both our waiter and the sommelier.
For starters I had the warm asparagus and parma ham bundle with buffalo mozzarella, pea purée, sweet chilli beetroot and herb vinaigrette. The sweet chilli gave it a nice taste, but I was a bit disappointed about the lack of saltiness in the parma ham. All in all a nice, if not outstanding starter.
My main was a chicken breast, stuffed with brie and grapes with parma ham, mashed potato, sautéed spring greens and a pancetta, pea and tarragon cream sauce. I have never seen grapes being used in cooking before, but all in all this was a very nice way to present a chicken breast, and one of the better chicken dishes I have had so far! The sauce was very tasty, and mixed well with the stuffing.
As always, I had a cheese board. A very well balanced cheese board, that was just enough – I usually end up with too much cheese or too much bread, but this one was just perfect.
Being a creature of habit, I let my friend choose the wines, so I can’t say much about them, apart from the fact that they were excellent!
Summary: A very nice restaurant on the outskirts of Hertford. Well worth the trip, and a rather good value for money!
